Why Life Needs a Comma

How was your day today? Did you spend the day feeling listless, lost in a whirlpool of endless thoughts? Did you feel like your worries were so heavy that they almost swallowed you whole?

Take a long, deep breath right now. Inhale deeply, pause for a moment to hold it, and gently exhale. Try doing this just for three minutes.

In the rush of a busy day, did you hustle to check off every item on your schedule, even skipping meals? Did you pause for a moment to look up at the blue sky, let the autumn breeze carry your thoughts away, and let the warm sunshine fill your heart? We are always so busy taking care of others and tending to our surroundings that we often neglect the person who is closest to us: ourselves.

Our bodies constantly try to talk to us and send us signals, but we tend to ignore them until burnout finally hits, and then we ask, "Why?" But our bodies never lie.

At the end of the day, when your daily routine is finally over, do you have a genuine conversation with your body? "You did a great job today. My head, my heart, my tight shoulders, my ten little fingers, and my two legs... all the cells in my body, you truly worked hard." Have you ever whispered a gentle greeting like this to yourself?

It doesn't have to be anything grand. Try inviting these simple, small pauses into your everyday life:

  • Get close to nature: Step away from the office for a moment to gaze at the sky outside, or deeply breathe in the scent of yellow roses.

  • Connect with music: Listen to your favorite songs that soothe your heart depending on the weather.

  • Move your body freely: Dance in front of the bathroom mirror! Shake your arms and legs however you like—who cares who's watching? Feel free to own your stage and dance your own wonderful dance (even a light aerobic move works!).

  • Focus on tactile sensations: Have a gentle conversation with your green houseplants, practice mindful calligraphy, or draw.

  • Nourish yourself: Savor a delicious meal, have a heart-to-heart talk with someone who resonates with you, or release bodily tension through yoga.

Like a line from a song that stays with me, there is something deeply touching about the ordinary, everyday way we live our lives.

Tonight, pause your hurried footsteps and send a warm, comforting embrace to your body and mind for all their hard work. Our daily lives always need a breathing space a warm comma.
